In 2024 – Skinny, flares, or bootcut?

Is the skinny jean dead or is it making a comeback?

Did it ever leave?

Ahh the questions we can ponder in the world of the ever fickle and changing fashion trends!

As we slide into Autumn in the Southern hemisphere it’s again time to rethink the wardrobe.

So what are the latest denim looks for Autumn Winter 2024?

The Skinny

Is our old friend, the skinny jean the former Rock Star on it’s way out? Or is the flare having another moment in the Sun, perhaps it’s the bootcut, barrel or wide leg that has the X factor? I think there will always a place for the skinny but perhaps just park the super skinny from 2005 and opt for a straight leg. These are flattering on every body shape! If you cannot drag yourself away from the skinny but need an update try a slim fit.

There is a definite shift happening away from the slick skinny silhouette to a more relaxed and dear I say voluminous look! Over the last few seasons we have seen the return of wider styles, baggy ‘Dad styles’ the vintage Mum styles, and 2024 is no exception. By far the most popular styles are the Wide leg, flare and bootcut shapes. These styles are everywhere, and they’re oh so flattering to wear.

So let’s talk the different styles;

The Straight

The straight leg is universally fabulous, flattering, practical and comfortable and as mentioned before works on everyone, straight leg jeans are always in style. The straight leg is one shape that will always have a place in your wardrobe. No matter what is cycling in and out of fashion, with feminine tailoring they will always ensure a contemporary look and feel.

The Slim

The slim style are close fitting, but slightly looser than a pair of skinny jeans, they tend to be fairly tight around the thighs, but with room to breathe as they slightly taper out towards the ankles offering a slightly more relaxed fit.

The Wide Leg

A foolproof option for 2024, you will find them available in dark and light washes, with both high-rise and low-rise options to suit all torso lengths, now that’s a win!, This style is so on point that even cropped styles are included here. If you are new adopter to the wider styles, then this is the perfect introduction to the world of loose-ish jeans.

The Bootcut

So what is a bootcut? Perhaps we can call it the little sister of the Flare! This cut has a slight flare below the knee and gradually widens just a little at the ankle. A flattering style on the curvy body, this small flare balances out the hip and thigh. Some love the bootcut, and others hate them, whatever camp you are in it looks like they are here to stay for a while.

The Flare

The flare is back and having another moment in the Sun! A bootcut on steroids, with the flare starting higher up the leg from mid thigh, ending with a dramatic, exaggerated flare! If you are curvy, an hourglass or pear this style is very complementary. They will work on a shorter frame, but are fabulous for tall women too, they accentuate the waist, hug curves and create great proportion. The flare helps balance out the hip and thigh, so the larger the hip & thigh the bigger the flare should be for balance.

So in summary the wider styles are here to stay for now, but if Skinny is still your thing and you rock them why not! If you are unsure of the wide trend but feel like an update, try slim or straight and if you are ready to take on the wider look, options abound!

Remember, what’s the secret to pulling off any outfit? Walk tall, be confident and smile!
